Doh! The top 10 tech 'fails' of 2011

The highs were high but the lows were lower in the tech world in 2011 U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner makes our top 10 list for using Twitter to send lewd photos PlayStation outage, "Duke Nukem Forever" and failed tablets also made the cut It was a rough year for RIM and its BlackBerry, with a handful of "fails" (CNN) -- Can't win 'em all, can you? The highs were pretty high in the tech world in 2011, as new gadgets, updates and advances delighted the masses. I mean, Facebook made a change that most people (so far) seemed to actually like. What are the odds? But the lows were lower. For every moment of digital bliss, it seemed, there was a clunker of equal or greater magnitude. So, who are we to not rub salt in the wounds of those who got it oh-so-wrong this year? In fairness, some of these "Doh!" moments came from folks who had otherwise good years. And nobody, not even perennial tech darling Apple, is perfect. (One hard-working journalist even had to write this very story twice after he accidentally deleted it and was forced to start over. Sweet, sweet irony.). Sure, tech successes are nice. But these social-media miscues, foot-in-mouth e-moves and other digital duds gave us more to talk about in 2011. Here are our 2011 "Tech Fails of the Year." Feel free to jump in the comments and let us know what we missed. Weiner on Twitter In a crowded and competitive field, former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner grabs our "What Were You Thinking?" award for this one. The congressman (we're staying away from name jokes because ... well ... too easy) was being talked up as possibly the next mayor of New York City when his Twitter account was apparently hacked by someone who sent lewd photos to some of his female followers. But along with the good (and, yes, sometimes, the bad) came the bizarre. And by bizarre, we mean the weird gadget creations and unexpected Internet sensations that went viral (cue Rebecca Black's "Friday"). Nonetheless, the strangest of the strange in the tech world made headlines by pushing the limits of technology, and this year it felt like there were more than ever. Here are some of 2011's most unusual and out of the ordinary tech headlines, stories we never thought could happen -- which baffled us when they did. 1. In 2011, perhaps no news story was bigger than the death of Steve Jobs Social media was used heavily to organize protest around the world Mysterious hacker groups rose to prominence in 2011 (CNN) -- The technology industry often finds itself pontificating about the future, but the busy news cycle this year gave us plenty to discuss. Very influential tech pioneers died; cyber-security cost companies billions of dollars; and trends in electronics and on the Web provided new tools and created new challenges. Smartphones and tablets each grew so immensely this year that we decided to give them their own mobile year-in-review list. As for future talk, there were plenty of bold, futuristic initiatives that did not quite bear fruit this year. The seeds of Hewlett-Packard's mobile strategy, Google's plans for Motorola post-acquisition, Intel's 3-D silicon transistors and mobile payment systems like Google Wallet were planted this year. But those stories were left off of this list because their products did not reach a mass market in 2011. Look for those to make big splashes in 2012. These 10 stories in 2

Many longtime franchises put bows on storylines that had been going on for years. It was also the year of the shooter (and the number 3) as "Battlefield 3," "Gears of War 3" and "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" brought players into combat zones with new and creative gameplay. Those titles got lots of hype and sold millions of units, but none made my list of the top games of the year. As with any top 10 list, many good games did not make the cut. For the most part that would be the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers , which faces near-constant scrutiny from countries, corporations and netizens. Think of ICANN as the head referee of a heated sporting event, under fire from all sides and rarely able to please everyone. Last week, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission wrote a letter saying ICANN has long failed to provide safeguards that protect consumers from online swindlers and help cybersecurity officials catch such crooks. In the letter, the FTC also criticized a major ICANN initiative that would let Internet users run their own domain-name extensions, to accompany .com, .org and others. He writes regular columns about social media and tech for CNN.com. (CNN) -- From the continuing rise of tablet devices to the daily-deals craze and the return of the Internet IPO, 2011 has been a transformative year for technology. The pace of change has become blisteringly fast, with traditional industries -- bookstores, video-rental chains, newspapers -- crumbling more quickly than we could have imagined. Predicting what will happen in 2012, therefore, is a shot in the dark: A year is virtually a lifetime in the digital era. And yet we can at least make a guess at what will happen in the early part of next year simply by looking at the trends that are shaping the latter half of this year. Why Apple may never catch Microsoft in TV

Diposkan oleh Maestro Goberan on Wednesday, December 7, 2011

In the U.S., Microsoft sold 960,000 Xbox consoles and 750,000 Kinect sensors Xbox is selling more units because the available content has gotten drastically better Microsoft's TV strategy so far has been best, but Apple could still pull a rabbit out of its hat (WIRED) -- "The problem with innovation in the television market is the go-to-market strategy," Steve Jobs told Hillcrest Labs' Dan Simpkins at the D8 conference in 2010. "It's not a problem of technology; it's not a problem of vision; it's a fundamental go-to-market problem." I don't think Jobs was trying to throw Apple-watchers off the track with a coy answer. I don't think we've taken this problem seriously enough when it comes to the future of television and living-room entertainment. And I don't think either Apple's current set-top box approach or the endlessly renewable speculations about a fully integrated big-screen Apple television set solve this problem. The best approach we've seen to this problem, and the best approach we're likely to see for some time, has been Microsoft's efforts with Xbox 360. I want to explain why I think Microsoft is beating and will continue to beat Apple in this space. Then I want to outline what Apple would need to do differently in order to beat back Microsoft, Sony, Google and all other contenders if it wants to conquer the living room. Xbox is winning because of content, not Kinect For me, a light bulb went off when I saw Microsoft's Black Friday sales numbers for Xbox 360 and Kinect. In the U.S., Microsoft sold 960,000 Xbox consoles and 750,000 Kinect sensors, including both standalone units and bundled with Xboxes. It was Xbox's biggest week ever; mighty impressive for a six-year-old game console likely to be displaced by a next-generation model in a year or so. But the total numbers are less interesting to me than the spread between them. It means there are at least 200,000 people, and quite possibly hundreds of thousands more, who

HipHop for PHP: Move Fast

One of the key values at Facebook is to move fast. For the past six years, we have been able to accomplish a lot thanks to rapid pace of development that PHP offers. As a programming language, PHP is simple. Simple to learn, simple to write, simple to read, and simple to debug. We are able to get new engineers ramped up at Facebook a lot faster with PHP than with other languages, which allows us to innovate faster.
Today I'm excited to share the project a small team of amazing people and I have been working on for the past two years; HipHop for PHP. With HipHop we've reduced the CPU usage on our Web servers on average by about fifty percent, depending on the page. Less CPU means fewer servers, which means less overhead. This project has had a tremendous impact on Facebook. We feel the Web at large can benefit from HipHop, so we are releasing it as open source this evening in hope that it brings a new focus toward scaling large complex websites with PHP. While HipHop has shown us incredible results, it's certainly not complete and you should be comfortable with beta software before trying it out.
HipHop for PHP isn't technically a compiler itself. Rather it is a source code transformer. HipHop programmatically transforms your PHP source code into highly optimized C++ and then uses g++ to compile it. HipHop executes the source code in a semantically equivalent manner and sacrifices some rarely used features — such as eval() — in exchange for improved performance. HipHop includes a code transformer, a reimplementation of PHP's runtime system, and a rewrite of many common PHP Extensions to take advantage of these performance optimizations.

While the minimum RAM required only about 32 MB. Large RAM (maximum of 1 GB, 64 MB or more recommended) is required if the Web Proxy package is run, and should also be supported by hard disk capacity of both the large and fast enough (like 80 GB 7200 RPM).
Packages are already installed but do not want us to use can be disabled or uninstalled on the next through the Winbox application. Packages are generally used are underlined in the table above.

In computer science, operational semantics is a way to give meaning to the computer program with a rigorous mathematical way. Operational semantics are classified into two categories: structural operational semantics (or small-step semantics) formally describes how the individual steps of a calculation which takes place in a computer-based systems. However, the network we are using is not always safe from criminals such as crackers (evil hackers). Especially when it comes to sensitive parts which is confidential to us. People with lacks of networking ethics tends to do bad activity over the net.
